Joe Schmidt’s tenure as Wallabies coach got off to a perfect start a week ago as his side downed Warren Gatland’s Wales 25 – 16 in Sydney.
Now facing the same opponents in Melbourne, Schmidt’s men have gotten off to the perfect start with an incredibly long-range try inside the opening ten minutes.
Hoovering up a loose ball following a searching kick from Wales, the Australians nearly butchered a routine clearance as fullback Tom Wright spilt the ball.
Yet in a throwback to the good old days of end-to-end Wallabies attacking rugby, winger Andrew Kellaway set up what could well be the score of the July test series.
Looking up to see the Welsh defence right in his face, Kellaway spotted a gap just behind the front-line defence and put in a searching kick.
As ever, the unpredictability of a rugby ball came into full effect as the ball bounced awkwardly for the Welsh defence but beautifully for Kellaway, who taped the ball down to an on-rushing Fraser McReight.
Claiming the ball, the backrow set off on his merry way as he charged towards the Welsh line. Clearly identifying that he wouldn’t go all the way, McReight found Filipo Daugunu, who sped away to finish off the try.
